Counseling Background/What to Expect from Therapy
My theoretical approach involves integrating aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT),
Person-Centered, Gestalt and Dialectical Behavior (DBT) therapies. CBT enables the client to
learn how maladaptive thoughts have the power to influence and control one’s behaviors.
Learning to identify those thoughts and replace them with healthy thoughts is central to changing
behaviors. I embrace the viewpoint of Person-Centered therapy which contends that each person
is unique, has value, and is worthy of unconditional regard and acceptance. I have found aspects
of Gestalt therapy, such as the empty chair technique, to be effective for some clients in
confronting painful and difficult situations from their past. Utilizing mindfulness and relaxation
techniques from DBT can also be beneficial for individuals who experience anxiety.
It is my commitment to my clients to provide a safe, non-judging, trusting, and warm
environment where they can work toward healing. Clients are asked to make a commitment to
the therapeutic process by attending all sessions and being open and honest. The initial session
will consist of gathering background information (assessment) and working together to establish
goals for counseling. In some cases, clients will be asked to complete growth assignments
between sessions. These assignments are designed to enhance therapy and are important toward
meeting the client’s goals for therapy.
